In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, an M16A1 is used instead, recognized with the full plain stock and longer barrel. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Liberty City Stories share the same 733. In GTA Vice City, the weapon is rendered more realistically - it resembles a Colt Model 733, although it is referred to incorrectly as the "M4".
In Grand Theft Auto III, the firearm is an 'exaggerated' Armalite AR10, with an extremely high rate of fire and a 60-round magazine. Throughout the games, the models of M16 derivatives features differ slightly, along with zoom capability, rate of fire, and power. Since the rifle fires the relatively powerful 5.56mm NATO round, it has noticeable recoil, albeit not nearly as much as the bigger AK-47. The M16 is useful in almost any situation, boasting accuracy, power and magazine capacity.

The Armalite/Colt M16 series of assault rifles are a staple of the GTA series, first appearing in GTA III, and then in every GTA game since. It has a twelve round magazine capacity (incorrect for a standard 1911, even converted to 9mm, however certain calibers and hi-capacity clones utilize 12 round mags).An M16A2 in the intro cutscene for GTA Vice City.
It is referred to as a "Nine" by Luigi Gotterelli ( Joe Pantoliano), Joey Leone ( Michael Rapaport), and even the clerk at AmmuNation although this seems incorrect, numerous commercial and/or converted variants and 1911 clones/copies actually exist in 9mm. It is used by the Liberty City Police Department and every gang in the city the notable exception being the Diablos in the beginning of the game - they only carry bats until Claude betrays them for King Courtney's Yardie Posse. It is first seen when Catalina shoots Claude in the opening bank robbery, then is later given to Claude in either Pump-Action Pimp or Farewell 'Chunky' Lee Chong, depending on which mission the player chooses first, and becomes available for purchase at the Portland AmmuNation afterwards. The first firearm Claude uses is the M1911A1, known simply as the 'Pistol'. The following weapons appear in the video game Grand Theft Auto III: Set within the fictional Liberty City, based on New York City, the game follows Claude after he is left for dead and quickly becomes entangled in a world of gangs, crime and corruption. GTA III is the first foray into true three-dimensional GTA gameplay, with the player taking control of the game via a third-person perspective, viewed from behind and above the player character, as opposed to the Top-Down Perspective in earlier Grand Theft Auto games.
